About This Book

Seven dragon tribes have been at war for generations. A secret movement called the Talons of Peace is determined to bring an end to the fighting, with the help of a prophecy. Five dragonets are enlisted, against their will, to end the terrible war. But when they escape their prison, the result may be more than intended . . .

Our Review

Seven dragon tribes have been at war for generations when The Dragonet Prophecy begins, and a secret group called the Talons of Peace is pinning its hope for ending that war on a prophecy involving five young dragonets. Those five don't choose this role, they're enlisted against their will, and the book's own description makes clear that once they break out of their prison, things don't go according to anyone's plan. Tui T. Sutherland's novel runs 274 pages and is aimed at ages 6 to 10, giving it room to build out tribe politics and rivalries without rushing the war itself.

The dragonets being unwilling participants rather than eager heroes is the detail that gives the book its emotional core: the story isn't really about winning a war so much as five young dragons figuring out whether they trust the destiny handed to them at all. That question, going along with a plan made for you versus choosing your own, sits underneath the escape-and-fallout plot, giving kids something to chew on alongside the action. It reads like the start of something bigger rather than a contained story, so it suits a reader ready to commit to a longer series rather than one who wants a single finished book.
