About This Book

In this exciting second installment of the three-book series, Carter and Sadie, offspring of the brilliant Egyptologist Dr. Julius Kane, embark on a worldwide search for the Book of Ra, but the House of Life and the gods of chaos are determined to stop them.

Our Review

Carter and Sadie Kane, the two kids of Egyptologist Dr. Julius Kane, head out on a global search for the Book of Ra in this second entry of a three-book series, racing against both a deadline and the House of Life, who are actively trying to stop them. Rick Riordan builds the book around Egyptian mythology, working gods and the threat of rising chaos into a plot that moves across multiple countries rather than staying in one place. At 486 pages, it gives the wider cast of gods and the higher stakes room to develop.

The siblings narrate in alternating chapters, so readers get both Carter's and Sadie's take on events and their very different personalities, plus the pressure they're each under to get a handle on magical abilities that are still new to both of them. That structure means a reader who prefers one sibling's voice over the other still gets plenty of their sections, while the back-and-forth keeps the pacing brisk across a genuinely global chase. Underneath the mythology and the action, the book keeps coming back to what the siblings owe each other and their family, which gives the adventure real weight heading into the third and final book.
