Our Review
This Portuguese-language board book turns a simple idea into a toddler game: on each page, a baby is shown in a familiar setting like the park or the beach, and the child reading along has to find the matching pair of shoes. Sujatha Lalgudi keeps the format consistent page to page, so once a toddler catches on to the pattern in the first few spreads, they can carry that same seek-and-find skill through the rest of the book on their own. At 24 pages, it's sized for a toddler's attention span rather than a longer sit-down read.
The matching task is doing more than it looks like: spotting which shoes go with which baby is an early exercise in visual discrimination, one of the building blocks that eventually supports reading, and setting each scene somewhere a toddler already recognizes, like the beach or the park, keeps the puzzle grounded in the child's own world instead of something abstract. It rewards being read more than once, since younger toddlers often want the find-it game repeated immediately after they succeed. It suits a Portuguese-speaking family well, and works just as well for a family building some Portuguese into regular story time, as a first interactive book rather than a straight read-aloud.
