About This Book
When Timmi and his friends find a secret message in an ancient book, they end up on a wild ride to unravel a mystery so profound it, will change their lives forever. Young Explorers is the Timmi Tobbson "early reader" series for adventurers and sleuths aged 6-8. Every page is fully illustrated, merging the visual appeal of a graphic novel with power of a text-based story to spark imagination. In typical Timmi Tobbson fashion, each Young Explorers book offers solve-them-yourself picture mysteries
Our Review
J. I. Wagner's Timmi Tobbson Junior entry sends Timmi and his friends after a secret message hidden inside an ancient book, and from there the story turns into a mystery the reader has to help work out, not just follow along with. It's part of the Young Explorers line, built for ages 6 to 8, and every one of its 96 pages is fully illustrated, so the book reads like a hybrid of a graphic novel and a chapter book rather than committing fully to either format.
The series' signature move is baking "solve-them-yourself" picture puzzles right into the plot, so a reader has to actually study the illustrations for clues instead of coasting on text alone, which keeps the pace from dragging even as the mystery gets more complicated. That structure suits a kid who's ready to leave picture books behind but would still lose steam on a page of dense text with no visual payoff. Freshabooks' 2020 release works as a bridge book, one that treats problem-solving as part of the fun rather than a chore layered on top of the story.
