About This Book

Over 100 animal-themed crossword puzzles, covering everything from sea creatures and land mammals to birds, pets and insects - and plenty of general knowledge. With quirky wildlife illustrations to enjoy on every page, the crosswords grow gradually more challenging throughout the book. These puzzles are perfect for long journeys and playing with friends and family, and they're great for children's spelling and vocabulary, too!

Our Review

A crossword grid is an odd way to teach a kid about animals, but Usborne's collection makes the case for it, packing more than 100 puzzles across 112 pages and sorting them loosely by difficulty so the early ones are gettable and the later ones actually make a ten-year-old think. Phillip Clarke ranges across sea creatures, land mammals, birds, and insects, mixing plain animal-name clues with general-knowledge questions that push past just naming the creature in the grid. Every page carries its own illustration, giving solvers a visual anchor before they've filled in a single square.

That difficulty curve is where the design earns its keep: a four- or five-year-old can get through the opening puzzles with help and feel like they actually finished something, while the later pages still hold up for a kid who's already fast with crosswords and wants a real challenge. It travels well — car trips, waiting rooms, a rainy Saturday — and works alone just as easily as it works as something two kids solve together over one book. Spelling and vocabulary come along for the ride, but it's the animal facts tucked into the clues that make a kid want to do just one more before closing it.
